1. George Mock was born before 1743 and died in 1807-1808 in Frederick Co., VA.

George and Sophia first appear together when they were married 21 Apr 1761. Their marriage is recorded in the book "Records of Pastoral Acts at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, known in the 18th century as the Warwick Congregation", which was translated by the Pennsylvania German Society in 1983. This church was located near present day Brickerville, Lancaster Co., PA. The records of the births and baptisms of George and Sophia's children also appear in this book.

Sophia is identified as the 4th child of Leonhardt Muller and Ana Maria in her baptismal record at the Muddy Creek Lutheran Church located in present day East Cocalico Twp., Lancaster Co., PA (@1). The baptism was performed by John Casper Stoever and the sponsors were Jacob Jr. and Sophia Weiss. The baptismal record also provided her date of birth. The Records of Pastoral Acts at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Warwick Congregation, identify Leonhardt as Johann Leonhardt Muller. Leonhardt remarried on 24 Apr 1750 to Barbara Eichelberger. Leonhardt's will appears in Lancaster Co., PA Will Book Y2 p.451 and names his children, including Sophia. The will was dated 2 Nov 1761 and probated 28 Nov 1761.

George's birth date was estimated assuming he was over 17 years of age when he married.

In the records of the Heidelberg Reformed Church in Schaefferstown, Lebanon Co., PA (approx. 8 miles from Warwick Twp.) George and Sophia Mock sponsored John George Mock 25 Feb 1773, the son of Henry and Eva Mock. This event was also recorded in the bible of Henry Mock, and identifies George's full name as John George Mock. This Henry is believed to have been the brother of George.

On 30 Apr 1750 a Michael Shauk conveyed to Henry Mock The Elser Saw and Hemp Rolling Mill, located on Middle Creek, Clay Twp., Lancaster Co., PA (@2). Henry later conveyed this property to Peter Elser. Peter Elser and Henry Mock both appear in the church records of the Warwick Congregation, along with the original owner of the above mill, Michael Kirch. (@2).

Peter Elser was the son of Hans Adam Elser and Mary Margaretha Hager (@3). Peter Elser and Henry Mock appear as passengers on board the ship "Ann" which arrived in Philadelphia 28 Sep 1749 from Rotterdam, Holland. On 28 Apr 1753 Heinrich Mock of Warwick Twp. (now Clay, PA) and his wife (not named) [Mary Margaretha] agreed to care for her children from her first marriage that were left under her care by her late husband Hans Adam Elser. The children are identified as Peter, Christina, Barbara and Eve (@3). Christina Elser married George Michael Eichelberger 25 Nov 1754, and Heinrich Mock and his wife Margaretha sponsored the baptism of George and Christina's daughter Maria Barbara Eichelberger at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Warwick on 21 Aug 1760.

The information regarding Hans Adam Elser and his wife Mary Margaretha Hager is further corroberated by a 2nd source (@4) that states Peter Elser married Anna Margaretha Stoever, daughter of the Reverend John Caspar Stoever 16 Nov 1760 by her father in Lebanon, PA. This source also states that Peter Elser arrived on the ship "Ann" in Philadelphia Sep 1749 and that his father was b. 1705 in Germany and married to Mary Margaretha Hager, daughter of Frederich and Barbara Hager of Russheim (located on the Rhine River abt. 20 miles s/w of Mahhneim/Heidelberg). This source states Peter Elser's mother was widowed when she traveled to America.

And yet a third source (@5) corroberates this information, stating that Margaretha Elser was a widow from Russheim who wanted "urgently" to get to PA, and went there on the ship "Ann", arriving 28 Sep 1749. It states that Margaretha settled in the Warwick settlement, Clay Twp., Brickerville being located in the center of the Twp.

In 1759 Heinrich and Margaret Mock sponsored a Stover child baptism. A Heinrich Mok and Caterina Mullerin also sponsored the baptism's of several of the children of George and Sophia Mock.

In the 1756 tax list of Warwick Twp. there appears a Henry Mock. On March 30, 1761 a Henry Moke from Warwick Twp. was naturalized. George Mock appears in the 1756 tax list of Earl Twp., Lancaster Co., PA.

No absolute proof that Henry is the father of George Mock has been found yet, however, the records infer he was likely George's father and had another son named Henry. If the Henry Mock who married the widow Margaretha Elser was George's father, it would appear that this Henry had a marriage prior to Margaretha that produced George and Henry, and that the 1st marriage and the birth of George and Henry would have probably been prior to their arrival in America.

George first appears in Frederick Co., VA 08 Sep 1775 when he purchased 307 1/2 acres of land on Cedar Creek from William Vance (@6).

George is shown as an assignee for John Ragley in the purchase of 3 acres of land one mile from Cedar Creek 14 Aug 1779 (@7). In this transaction George's last name is spelled Mauk and indicates the property was adjacent George's.

In a Frederick Co., VA deed recorded 13 Sep 1779 George leased 115 acres (@8). In another deed 01 Oct 1779 George purchased this 115 acres and an additional 100 acres (@9). George and Sophia leased this land 01 Dec 1779 (@10) and sold the land 02 Dec 1779 (@11).

George appears in the records of the St. Paul Lutheran's Church in Strasburg, VA starting in 1782, when he is listed as having paid money to the church.George's children and several grandchildren also appear in these church records, into the early 1800's. Of interest is several of the children of Peter Mauck Sr. of Tom's Brook, Frederick Co., VA appear in these same church records during this time period.

George was granted power of attorney 22 Apr 1784 for George Volk for the administration of Volk's property (@12). One of the witnesses was Alexander Hite.

George purchased an additional 10 acres on Cedar Creek adjacent his land 09 Mar 1790 (@13). In this deed George's last name was spelled Moke.

George appears in the personal property tax lists of Frederick Co. VA from their inception in 1782, yearly thru 1807. This, with the below Will dates, would indicate he died between 1807 and the time the Will was proved in 1808. George also appears yearly in the property tax lists of Frederick Co., VA from 1782 through the time of his death.

George's Will in Frederick Co., VA was dated 13 Sep 1803 and proved 04 Oct 1808 (@14). His will identifies his children as Daniel, Christopher, Catherina the wife of Jeremiah Eberly, Christina the wife of Jacob Harman, George and Susannah. In his Will George states that his son George married a woman contrary to his wishes and was otherwise disobedient, then leaves George Jr. only $1. George Sr. also mentioned owning land in both Frederick and Shenandoah Counties.

George's personal property was appraised in Sept. 1808 (@15) and his estate sale was 28 Oct 1808 (@16). One of the buyers at George's estate sale was a Michael Mauck. This is very likely Michael Mauck, son of Frederick and Motlena Mauck, who owned property near Middletown, where George and Sophia lived. It would appear these two families of Mock/Mauck's knew of each other. It is possible they were related but the connection is not known or proven. Sophia also appears as a buyer at this sale.

On 26 Dec 1818 Abraham Nisewander, executor of the Will of Christopher Mock, and Rosina Mock, sold Christopher's land on plot #11 in Middletown (@17). This deed states that Christopher had wanted this land rented until the death of his mother, after which it should be sold and the proceeds divided between his brothers and sisters. Sophia appears in the property tax lists of Frederick Co., VA residing adjacent Abraham Nisewinder and Isaac Hite (lived at Belle Meade) yearly from 1812 through 1821.

The above Michael Mauck appears in these property tax lists adjacent George from 1806 until George's death, then adjacent Sophia through 1821. The tax lists are in order of visit alphabetical by the first initial of the last name, meaning the tax list cannot be used so show they lived adjacent each other. However, in the 1822 tax list Michael Mauck was charged 1800 dollars extra for buildings that had belonged to Sophia Mock. These tax lists show Michael owning 330 acres near Middletown.

Of interest is that this family's last name is often spelled Muck or Muk. George's son Daniel appears in the 1810 census Frederick Co., VA as Muck and his descendants adopted this spelling in Fairfield Co., OH from 1820 onward. George's son George appears as George Muk in the 1810 census of Montgomery Co., VA and his descendants in Harrison Co., IN adopted this spelling from 1840 on. Perhaps it was because of the way it was pronounced.

2. Catherina Mock (George1) was born on 10 Sep 1762 in Lancaster Co., PA and died after 1840.

Catherina is identified as a daughter of George and Sophia in "Records of Pastoral Acts at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, known in the 18th century as the Warwick Congregation", which was translated by the Pennsylvania German Society in 1983. This church was located near present day Brickerville, Lancaster Co., PA. The book also provided her birth and baptism information. Her sponsors were Henrich Mok and Caterina Mullerin.

Catherina appears in her father's Will dated 13 Sep 1803 in Frederick Co., VA (@1). The Will also identifies her husband as Jeremiah Eberly.

Jeremiah Eberly appears in his father's (Jeremiah Eberly Sr.) Frederick Co., VA Will which was proven 10 Sep 1799 (@2). Jeremiah Sr.'s Will relates that he lived adjacent Alexander Hite, who translated the Will from German to English. Jeremiah's estate sale indicates his wifes name as Eve.

Jeremiah Eberly appears in the 1810 census of Shenandoah Co., VA at 26-45 years old and in the 1820 census of Strasburg, Shenandoah Co., VA 45 plus years of age.

Jeremiah Eberly Jr.'s Will appears in Shenandoah Co., VA proved 23 Aug 1824 (@4). The Will identifies his wife and children and divides up his land on Cedar Creek and in Strasburg. Jeremiah's personal estate sale is dated 08 Oct 1824 (@5). Among the buyers was his wife, Catherina.

The will of Philip Peter Backer Sr. in 1796 (@6) identifies his grandson as Daniel Eberly, son of Jeremiah Eberly. The will does not identify Philip's daughters. In the Shenandoah Co., VA marriage records Christina Backer and Jeremiah Eberly were married in Shenandoah Co., VA 12 Oct 1785. It would appear from this that Jeremiah Eberly married first Christina Backer who probably died, then married Catherina Mock. Daniel's birth 2 Aug 1789, baptism 30 Aug 1789 and parents (Jeremiah and Christina) are identified in the records of St. Paul's Luthern Church in Strasburg, Shenandoah Co., VA. His sponsors were Philip Peter Becker (Baker) and wife Dorothea.

Of interest is that Daniel Eberly married Catherine Crabill 12 Feb 1821 in Shenandoah Co., VA, the marriage record identifying Catherine's father as Christian Crabill. Daniel's sisters, Christina and Elizabeth, married Catherine Crabill's brothers, William and David. Christian Crabill married Barbara Mauck 06 Feb 1782 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Barbara (b. 13 Dec 1764) was the daughter of John Mauck (b. 25 Nov 1739) and Ann Deliliah Zumwalt. John was the son of Peter Mauck of Frederick Co., VA (@7). Barbara also appears in the household of her son William Crabill and his wife Christina Mock, in the 1850 census of Shenandoah Co., VA.

The interesting part is that Daniel Eberly's step-mother, and Elizabeth and Christina's mother, was the daughter of George and Sophia Mock, and that their spouses were the grandchildren of John Mauck. These two lines of Mauck/Mock's are not known to be related.

From this we know that Daniel Eberly was not the son of Jeremiah Eberly and Christina Mock. Jeremiah's Will does not indicate which marriage his other children were from.

Catherine appears in the 1830 census of Shenandoah Co., VA adjacent Daniel, George, Elizabeth, and a Philip F. Eberly. Catherine appears again in the 1840 census of Shenandoah Co., VA.

"How We Came To Be...A History of the Crabill Family" by Robert and Patricia Crabill lists the family and descendants of Christian Crabill and Barbara Mauck. This book shows pictures of the bible of Jeremiah Eberly and states the bible indicates Jeremiah [Jr.] was b. in Heilbronn on the River Neckar, Canton of Wittenberg 22 Mar 1758. It also relates that Daniel Eberly who married Catharine Crabill (dau. of Christian Crabill and Barbara Mauck) was the son of Jeremiah Eberly from his first marriage to Christina, who died in 1790. Jeremiah remarried to Katherine two years later, and George, Jacob, Christina, Katherina, and Elizabeth Eberly were from this 2nd marriage.

Daniel and Mary's marriage appears in a Shenandoah Co., VA marriage bond. Giving consent was Alexander Hite. This marriage is also reported in Frederick Co., VA marriage records as having occurred in Shenandoah Co., VA. The Frederick Co. records identify Mary's parents as Alexander and Elisabetha Hite.

Mary's birth, baptism, and parents appear in the records of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Strasburg, Shenandoah Co., VA. Mary's father, Alexander Hite, is buried in the churchyard of this church. Daniel appears in the personal property tax lists of Frederick Co., VA yearly starting in 1796 and continuing thru 1811.

In a Shenandoah Co. deed dated 19 Mar 1816 (@6) Daniel appointed an attorney to represent him in Shenandoah Co. in the matter of his wife's legacy from her father Alexander Hite (dec'd). Daniel's last name is spelled Muck and he indicated he was a resident of Fairfield Co., OH.

In a Fairfield Co., OH deed in 1819 (@7) Daniel Mock deeded land he had leased in Section 19, Twp. 14, Range 16 to Hanney Mock and Abraham Eversole. The deed identifies Hanney as his son and Abraham Eversole as his son-in-law. The signature of Hanney appears to be Hennering.

Daniel appears in the 1820 census of Fairfield Co., OH as Daniel Muck. His descendant's retained this spelling instead of Mock. Mary Muck appears in the 1830 census of Fairfield Co., OH age 50-60 yrs. Daniel is no longer there. It is assumed he died before this census.

This deed states that Christopher had wanted this land rented until the death of his mother, after which it should be sold and the proceeds divided between his brothers and sisters.

Rosina appears in the 1810 (16-26 yrs), 1820 (45+ yrs), and 1830 (50-60 yrs) census of Shenandoah Co., VA. In the 1820 census she was in Strasburg.

Christina appears in her father's Will dated 13 Sep 1803 in Frederick Co., VA (@1). The Will also identifies her husband as Jacob Harman.

The book "Floyd County" by Dr. Amos Wood provides a short biography on this family. It provided Christina's death date. According to the book Jacob and Christina lived in Frederick Co., VA until 1802 when they moved to the area of the present day Floyd Co., VA. Jacob purchased 326 acres on West Fork of Little River where they lived until his death. It also relates that they were members of the Zion Lutheran Church near the courthouse, where some of their children were baptized. This information also appears in "Harman-Harmon Genealogy and Biography" by John William Harman. This book also identifies Jacob's parents, Mathias and Elizabeth. Yet another book, "Rockingham Co., Virginia Personals" by Marshall Firebaugh, identifies Jacob Harman's birth data and parents, listing as it's source "Hardesty's Encyclopedia" which was published in 1884. Jacob and Christina lived in the area of Montgomery Co., VA that became Floyd Co., VA in 1831.

Of interest is that Jacob Harman's brother, John, remained in Frederick Co., VA and John's son Solomon S. Harman married Evelina Harriet Mauck 11 Dec 1828. Evelina Mauck was the daughter of Michael Mauck and Barbara Cryzer. There is no known relation between these two Mauck families.

6. George Mock (George1) was born on 5 Jun 1771 in Lancaster Co., PA, died on 1 Sep 1837 in Harrison Co., IN at age 66, and was buried in Hottel Cemetery, Washington Twp., Harrison Co., IN.

George is identified as a son of George and Sophia in "Records of Pastoral Acts at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, known in the 18th century as the Warwick Congregation", which was translated by the Pennsylvania German Society in 1983. This church was located near present day Brickerville, Lancaster Co., PA. The book also provided his birth and baptism information. His sponsors were Jacob Muller and wife Anna Maria Muller.

George is listed in his father's Frederick Co., VA Will dated 13 Sep 1803 (@1). His father related that George married a woman contrary to his father's wishes and was otherwise disobedient, then leaves him only $1.

George's marriage is listed in the Frederick Co., VA marriage register. The bond identifies Mary's father as Peter Gander and the bondsman as Jacob Gander. Jacob Gander is identified as a brother of Mary in "The History and Genealogy of the Gander Families" by Charles Harrison Gander. This book also indicates Mary's marriage to George, and provided Mary's birth information and her parent's information.

George appears in the personal property tax lists of Frederick Co., VA in 1799, 1801 and 1802. George first appears in Montgomery Co., VA in the personal property tax list of 1803, and appears yearly in these tax lists through 1811.

George and Maria appear in the church records of the Zion Lutheran Church in Montgomery Co., VA 14 Jul 1805, when they sponsored the baptism of Benjamin Harman, son of Jacob Harman and Christina Mock (George's sister) (@2). George appears in a Montgomery Co., VA probate inventory for Benjamin Widdle 20 Aug 1807 as a witness (@3). The probate also mentions debts to be collected by Jacob Harman. George is listed in the 1810 census of Montgomery Co., VA as George Muk, adjacent Jacob Harman, husband of his sister Christina.

In a Frederick Co. deed dated 22 Jun 1811 (@4) George and Mary of Montgomery Co., VA sold seventeen acres near Belle Grove, Frederick Co., VA to Isaac Hite. This land had been received by George from his brother Christopher, who had received it from their father. Daniel Mock was one of the witnesses. The deed is followed by a court order indicating Mary was visited in Montgomery Co. to ensure the deed met with her approval. The witnesses to this deed included Daniel Mock and Peter & John Senseney. Peter Senseney, possibly a father of these two vs. the same Peter, lived adjacent George's parents in Frederick Co., VA in 1779 (@5).

Documentation stating that George Mock and Mary Gander moved on to Indiana has not been found. However, an examination of the records involving George and Mary Mock/Muck of Harrison Co., IN and their connections to the Gander and Senseney families would indicate that they are the same George and Mary. The year of birth on their headstones also match those of George and Mary.

According to the "Sensiney's of America" by Barton Sensenig Dr. Peter Senseney of Frederick Co., VA had sons John and Peter. According to the Frederick Co., VA marriage records John Senseney married Nancy Gander 09 Jul 1790. John and Nancy had sons Peter, Samuel, and Abraham who moved to Harrison Co., IN. All three of these sons appear in probate and deed records of Harrison Co., IN.

"The History and Genealogy of the Gander Families" by Charles Harrison Gander identifies Nancy as a possible sister of Mary Gander (George Mock's wife). It also identifies another sister of Mary as Magdalena Gander who married first John Pratt and second Abraham Bline, and that Magdalene and Abraham moved to Harrison Co., IN by 1840.

A George Mauck first appears in Harrison Co., IN in the 1811 property tax list on 26 Nov for 160 acres in section 8, twp. 4, range 3. George also appears in the property tax lists for 1812, 1814, and 1817 for this same land. A review of the deed records of Harrison Co., IN failed to locate the original purchase of this land.

On 02 Jun 1818 George Mock purchased 50 acres in Harrison Co., IN in section 18, twp. 5, range 5 (@6) and 100 acres in section 7, twp. 5, range 5 (@7).

In a Harrison Co., IN Will dated 01 Sep 1837 and proved 18 Sep 1837 (@8) George Muck identifies his wife as Mary and their children as Elizabeth, John, Jacob, Samuel, Margaret wife of Henry Keller, and Nancy wife of Anthony Pitman. The administrator of this Will was Peter Senseney (son of Mary's sister Nancy).

George's land in section 8, twp. 4, range 3 was sold by some of his children on 24 Aug 1839 (@9). Additional children sold this land 02 Jun 1839 (@10), 08 Jun 1840 (@11) and 10 Jul 1843 (@12).

George and Mary are buried in the Hottel Cemetery, Washington Twp., Harrison Co., IN. Their tombstones provided their death dates and Mary's birth year. Their daughter Rebecca and her husband are also buried in the same cemetery.

Of interest is that John Mauck/Mauk, grandson of Peter Mauck of Frederick Co., VA, also moved to Harrison Co., IN and lived there at the same time as George and Mary, and both John's and George's families appear in the church records of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Strasburg, Shenandoah Co., VA. No connection has been found between the two families. John's family is further detailed in "The Descendant's of Peter Mauck" by William Wolph. Caution should be used when researching both these families as they lived in the same area and many of their children had the same names.

On 11 Jun 1797 Susannah, daughter of George Mock, received Holy Communion for the first time, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Strasburg, Shenandoah Co., VA. The church records state she was 15 years old at the time she received communion.

Susannah is identified as a daughter of George and Sophia by her father's Will dated 13 Sep 1803 (@1).

In a Frederick Co. deed dated 07 Sep 1811 (@2) Susannah and her brother Daniel sold land they had inherited from their father George. Susannah appears in the personal property tax lists of Frederick Co., VA in 1811 and 1813.

Susannah and Philip's marriage appears in the Frederick Co., VA marriage register. The bondsman was Abraham Stickley.

Philip Setzer appears in the 1840 and 1850 census of Warren Co., VA which provided his birth information. In 1840 there was a female 50-60 years old in the household. By 1850 she is gone and Philip is listed with his children Henry and Catherine. It is assumed this female in 1840 was Susannah, which provided her birth information.

Of interest is that in the 1840 census Philip appears next to Marcus Baker, bondsman of the marriage of Jacob Mauck and Abigail Shambaugh, Jacob being the son of Daniel Mauck and Rebecca Baker. Further down the same page Abigail (Shambaugh) Mauck and a George Mauck are listed. Abigail was the wife of Jacob Mauck, son of Daniel Mauck and Rebecca Baker. George was yet a third Mauck line. All three of these Mauck lines are not known to be connected, yet apparently lived close to each other in Warren Co. in 1840.

Susannah an Philip are buried in the St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery in Strasburg, Virginia. The cemetery provided their birth an death dates.

It is assumed these were from his first marriage to Mary Keil, based on the children's birth dates.

"How We Came To Be...A History of the Crabill Family" by Robert and Patricia Crabill lists the family and descendant's of Christian Crabill and Barbara Mauck. This book shows pictures of the bible of Jeremiah Eberly and states the bible indicates George was born in 1793 and the son of Jeremiah Eberly and Katherine.

Elizabeth's marriage to Abraham was obtained from the Fairfield Co., OH marriage records, which indicate Elizabeth as Betsey Muck.

Daniel and Elizabeth appear together in the 1850 census of Fairfield Co., OH with their children and Elizabeth's sister, Mary Muck. The census provided the family's birth information.

Abraham also appears in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 census of Fairfield Co., OH.

Abraham and Elizabeth are buried in the St. Michael's Reformed Church Cemetery in Liberty Twp., Fairfield Co., OH. Their headstones provided their dates of death, and Abraham's date of birth. Elizabeth's headstone states she died 1 Jul 1863 at the age of 66 years 9 days. This age conflicts slightly with the birthdate found in the St. Paul's Luthern Church records. Tombstones are known to be slightly off on dates, so the church record date was used in this work.

Henry's birth, baptism and parents are identified in the records of St. Paul's Luthern Church in Strasburg, Shenandoah Co., VA. His sponsor was Jacob Hite.

In a Fairfield Co., OH deed in 1819 (@1) Daniel Mock deeded land he had leased in Section 19, Twp. 14, Range 16 to Hanney Mock and Abraham Eversole. The deed identifies Hanney as his son and Abraham Eversole as his son-in-law. The signature of Hanney appears to be Hennering. This was apparently Henry.

Henry's marriage to Maria was obtained from the Fairfield Co., OH marriage records which indicated Maria's name as Polly.
