1. Gottlieb Mock, son of Gottlieb Mack.

Gottlieb's marriage to Anna Ziegler, daughter of Conrad Ziegler deceased, 22 Nov 1778, appears in the records of Reverend Waldschmidt as having occurred in "Rhunstown" (Reamstown). This record identified Gottlieb as a son of Gottlieb Mack.

The birth of Gottlieb and Ann's daughter Elizabeth appears in the church records of the "Muddy Creek Church" (Lutheran and Reformed) at East Cocalico Twp., Lancaster Co. PA. This church record states she was born 6 Dec 1781. Her parents are identified as Gottlieb and Anna Mack. The sponsors were Adam and Christina Moser.

On 30 Apr 1782 Gottlieb and Anna Mack were sponsors at the baptism of Catharina Reuter, daughter of Michael and Magdalena Reuter, at the same church.

Gottlieb and Anna Mack sponsored the baptism of John Chiljan, son of Abraham Chiljan and Elizabeth, born October 27, 1778, bapt November 22, 1778 in Berks Co., PA (@2).

Michael Chiljan, son of the late Matthias Chiljan, married Elizabeth Zigler, daughter of Conrad Zigler, May 26, 1778 in Berks Co., PA (@2).

In Berks Co., PA on 26 May 1782 Peter Schneider, son of Valentine Schneider, married Anna Maria Ziegler, daughter of the late Conrad Zeigler (@2).

Cutlip Maugh appears on the list of Taxables for Franklin County, PA in 1786 in Letterkenny and Greene Townships, which were combined on same list (@1).

Gotlep Mock appears in the 1790 census of Franklin Co., PA with 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16 and 5 females.

Gottlieb first appears in Shenandoah Co., VA in the 1794 personal property tax list, and continues to appear in the lists yearly until 1800. These lists were compiled yearly from 1782 through 1850. His first name in these lists appears as Gudlep, Godlip and eventually and finally Godlove (in German this would be Gottlieb).

In Shenandoah Co., VA on 16 Aug 1800 Godlove Mauk posted the bond for the marriage of Elizabeth Mauk to Joel Berry.

In the DAR library in Washington D.C. there is a history on the Family of Piatt-Pyatt-Pyeatte-Pyeatt, etc. by Ruth Ravenscroft. Within this work is quoted a letter in 1941 from Mrs. Carolyn Cazort to Ralph W. Shreve. In this letter Mrs. Cazort states she was in possession of the family bible of Philip Mock, which she donated to the University of Arkansas. She provided a list of the siblings of Philip, along with the dates of birth for everyone, as they appear in the bible. The bible did not state who their parents were or where they were born.

Ravenscoft's work quotes from several researcher's in the 1940's who descended from this Philip Mock, and from a Barbara whom they thought was Philip's sister. These researcher's believed Philip and his siblings descended from a Godfrey Mock, but gave no indication as to where this information came from. It's likely it came from the Barbara they thought was Philip's sister. With the information they had at the time it's clear how they drew certain conclusions, some of which were inaccurate. Given the information from the bible of Philip Mock and comparing it to the information we have in the 1990's, it is clear Philip and his sibings were the children of Gottlieb and Anna Mock. Any one piece of information on each child would not prove this, but given the totality of the information it is much clearer.

The bible lists the following siblings:

George Mock born Sept 1, 1777
Elizabeth Mock born Dec 9, 1781
Mary Mock born Aug 17, 1783
Nancy Mock born Apr 22, 1785
Barbara Mock born Apr 15, 1787
John Mock born Oct 4, 1789
Jacob Mock born Jan 8, 1792
Margaret Mock born Apr 8, 1794
Philip Mock Jan 4, 1797

...and finally Philip's wife, Jane, born Sep 14, 1805.

Ravenscroft's work states that this bible was examined by Ralph Shreve at the University of Arkansas in 1954 and found to have been severely damaged by age and neglect. Mr. Shreve was able to verify many, but not all, of the information provided by Carolyn Cazort in her letter.

The birth date for Elizabeth provided by the above church records, is 3 days off the one in the bible. Elizabeth married Elijah Berry (bondsman Godlove Mauk). Elijah's brother Joel married Nancy Mauk in Shenandoah Co., VA 8 Jun 1806, the bondsman being George Mauk.

Joel, Elijah, Nancy and Elizabeth all moved to Fairfield Co., OH, and are all buried in the New Salem Methodist Episcopal Cemetery in Perry Co., OH. Joel, Elijah and Nancy are buried adjacent each other. Elizabeth is buried adjacent her third husband. Elizabeth's headstone provides an age at death that indicates her birth was in 1781, matching the year of birth for Elizabeth in the above bible and birth record. Nancy's headstone provides an age at death that provides a birthdate of 14 Apr 1785, 8 days off the above bible record date.

The bond for the marriage of George Mauck to Elizabeth Mourer in Shenandoah Co. , VA was posted 10 Dec 1803, by Elizabeth's father John Mourer. John Mourer's wife, Margaret, is identified as a daughter of George Ziegler in a Shenandoah Co. deed dated 25 Aug 1784. It is unknown if or how this George Ziegler is related to Anna Ziegler.

George Mack and "wife" reported the birth of an unnamed son in the records of the Stoney Creek Lutheran Church near Columbia Furnace in 1806. In the same church in 1814 John Mock and his wife Elizabeth report the birth of a son, Levy.

The bond for the marriage of John Mauk to Elizabeth Helsley was posted in Shenandoah Co., VA 28 Apr 1812, the bondsman being Elizabeth's father Peter Helsley.

George Mock appears as a witness to the Will of Jacob Helsley dated 21 Nov 1811 and proved 07 Feb 1814. George also appeared as a witness giving oath when this Will was proved. This Will also identifies Jacob's wife, Mary, and their children, which included Peter Helsley. John "Mocks" appears as a buyer in the estate sale of Jacob Helsley 21 Feb 1814.

George Mauck/Mock remained in Shenandoah Co. until the formation of Warren Co., VA in 1836. He appears in the census from 1810 through 1860. The census provides a birth range for George from 1780 through 1794. It is assumed that he was at least 17 when he married Elizabeth, which places him being born before 1786.

According to the will of Peter Helsley, his daughter Elizabeth was deceased as of 1849, and had gone to Ohio. No record of John has been found after the birth of his son at Stoney Creek, so his age is not known.

On 3 Jun 1818 Peter Snider posted the bond for the marriage of Barbara Mauck to Elkana Skeen in Shenandoah Co., VA. No further record of Barbara and Elkana has been found. This the the same Peter Schneider who married Anna Maria Ziegler, sister of Anna who married Gottlieb Mack (see above).

In the Lutheran-Zion Pine Church Record 1786-1827 Stoney Creek, Virginia Vol II by Klaus Wust, Peter Schneider and Anna Maria Scheider appear as communicants several years from 1803 through 1826.

The will of Peter Snider dated 24 Jul 1832 and proved 11 Mar 1833 (@3) in Shenandoah Co. names his wife as Ann Maria and children as Ann wife of John Wiseman, Mary Bowman wife of Christley Bowman, Elizabeth wife of Absalom Rinker. Witnesses Joseph H. Samuels, Joseph Pitman, Andrew Pitman.

On 9 Apr 1810 in Shenandoah Co., VA George Mourer and Catharine his wife sold 72 acres to Peter Snyder (@4). This George Mourer was the son of John Mourer Sr. and his wife Margaret Zigler. George's brother, John Mourer, was the father of Elizabeth Mourer who married George Mauck in 1803 Shenandoah Co., VA.

On 10 Jun 1822 Jacob Y. Barnes posted the bond for the marriage of Margaret Mauck to Jacob Hutcheson in Shenandoah Co. Jacob and Margaret's first two sons were born at Columbia Furnace. The 1850 and 1860 census indicate an age for Margaret that places her birth about 1800. However, by 1870 she was deceased and her headstone states she died at the age of 75 years, which indicates she was born before 1795.

Of significance, is that prior to the find of Philip Mock's bible, the parents of all of these Mock/Mauck's were not known. Also of significance is the fact Gottlieb Mock appears in Shenandoah Co. starting in 1794, and after he disappears from the records in 1800 when he posts the marriage bond for Elizabeth Mauck, there appear a group of Mauck/Mock's in the Stoney Creek area of Shenandoah Co. that match the names provided by Philip's bible (minus three of the siblings), closely match the years of their birth, and several of them appear in records together, although their relationships are not indicated. Add to this that Nancy's and Elizabeth's births match almost exactly the dates in Philip's bible, they marry brothers, move to Ohio together and eventually wind up buried in the same cemetery.

Ravenscroft's work also relates that Gottlieb is believed to have moved to NC, were he remarried to Sarah (Brummel) Little, and had another daughter named Barbara, who was the Barbara that also moved to Arkansas and met with Philip's son John, discovering they were from the same father.

2. George Mauck (Gottlieb1) was born on 1 Sep 1777 in PA and died after 1860 in Probably VA.

George's birthdate was provided by the bible records of his brother Philip. There is no direct proof that Gottlieb and Anna were George's parents, however, given the totality of information about George and his siblings, it is this author's opinion that these were his parents. For further on this, see the narrative under Gottlieb Mock and Anna Ziegler.

Conflicting with George's birthdate is that the marriage of his parents was one year after his birth. It is not known if the bible record is incorrect, if George was born out of wedlock, or if he perhaps was born from a prior marriage of Gottlieb.

George's marriage to Elizabeth 10 Dec 1803 appears in the Shenandoah Co., VA marriage records. The record identified her father as John and spells their last name as Mowrer. George & Elizabeth's births are estimated assuming they were over 17 when married.

In a Shenandoah Co., VA deed dated 1 Sep 1809 (@1) John Mourer and George Coffell, trustee's for the Reformed and Lutheran congregation near Stoney Creek purchased 2 acres to build a school. John Mourer's father, George Mourer, was a member of this church in 1753 when the members applied for a grant of land for the church (@2).

John Mourer is identified as a son of George and Ann Mary Mourer in George's Shenandoah Co., VA Will dated 15 Nov 1775 and proven 28 May 1776 (@10).

John Mourer's wife, Margaret, is identified as a daughter of George Ziegler in a Shenandoah Co. deed dated 25 Aug 1784 where she, her husband John and her sisters sold 300 acres to George Granstaff. This deed states George died Intestate and left his property to his 7 daughters, having had no sons. The property is described as being on Narrow Passage Creek. (@11). Of interest is George Ziegler's other daughters included Susanna who married Stephen Showman. Stephen Showman was a witness to the will of Jacob Helsley, the same will George Mauck appears in as a witness.

John Mourer purchased back 100 acres on both sides of Narrow Passage Creek from George Granstaff in Shenandoah Co., VA 11 Jul 1790 (@12) and an additional 22 acres there 10 Mar 1800 (@13). On 13 Apr 1801 John and Margaret his wife sold the 22 acres they purchased 10 Mar 1800 (@14).

In the records of the Lutheran Zion-Pine Church of Stoney Creek, Shenandoah Co., VA (@2) Georg Mack and wife had born to them a son (not named) 15 Jun 1806 who was baptised 14 Sep 1806. John Mock, Jacob Helsley, Peter Helsley, and George Dellinger appear in the same church records

George was probably the George Mauk who posted the bond in the 08 Jun 1806 marriage of Elijah Berry to Nancy Mauk 08 Jun 1806. On 16 Aug 1800 Joel Berry married Elizabeth Mauk, the bondsman being a Godlove Mauck. Godlove Mauck appears in the Shenandoah Co., VA personal property taxes in 1794, 1795, 1797, 1799, and 1800. Godlove may have been the father of George, Nancy, Elizabeth and John Mauck, or a brother. Godlove was also spelled Guplep and Godlip in the tax lists, and is commonly a variation of Gottlieb. In the 1790 census of Franklin Co., PA there appears a Gudlip Mock, with two sons the right ages to be George and John (see below), and several daughters. Also in Franklin Co., VA were several descendant's of Johannes Mack, son of Alexander Mack, founder of the Church of the Brethren. Johannes Mack died in Reading, PA in 1784 (@3) and his will identified a son named Gottlieb. There is not absolute proof that this Gudlip/Gottlieb in Shenandoah Co. was descended from Johannes Mack and further research is needed.

George appears in the 1810 census of Shenandoah Co., VA (26-45 yrs old) with his last name spelled Mock. Listed on the same page are Peter Helsley and several Dellinger families. Enumerated with George are 1 boy 0-9, 1 male 16-26, 1 girl 0-9, and 1 woman 26-45. The male 16-26 may be John Mauck.

George appears as a witness to the Will of Jacob Helsley dated 21 Nov 1811 and proved 07 Feb 1814 (@4). George also appeared as a witness giving oath when this Will was proved. Also appearing, as a bondsman, was George Dellinger. George's last named in both of these documents is spelled Mock. This Will also identifies Jacob's wife, Mary, and their children, which included Peter Helsley. Peter Helsley's daughter Elizabeth married "John Maup" 28 Apr 1812 in Shenandoah Co., VA. John "Mocks" appears as a buyer in the estate sale of Jacob Helsley 21 Feb 1814 (@5).

George appears in the 1820 census of Isabella Furnace (near Luray), Shenandoah Co., VA (26-45 yrs old) with his last named appearing to be spelled Mawk or Mauck. Enumerated with George are 3 boys 0-9, 1 male 16-26, 1 girl 0-9, 2 girls 16-26, and a woman 26-45. The older male and one of the older girls may be John Mock and his wife Elizabeth Helsley.

George appears in the 1830 census (40-50 yrs old) of Shenandoah Co., VA with his last name spelled Mawk. Eumerated with George are 2 boys 0-5, 2 boys 5-10, 1 boy 10-15, 2 boys 15-20, 2 girls 0-5, 1 girl 10-15, and a woman 30-40. This is a total of ten children of which only 2, Sarah and possibly William, can be accounted for.

George appears yearly in the personal property tax lists of Shenandoah Co., VA 1804-1835 (except 1812 & 1814) and then in Warren Co., VA 1836-1850. Warren Co., VA was formed from parts of Shenandoah and Frederick Co.'s in 1836. His last name spelling varies between Mauck and Mock.

The Shenandoah Co. will of John Mourer dated 29 Jun 1822 and proved 13 Jan 1834 (@6) and identifies his children as John Jr., George, Jacob, Mary and her daughter Rebecca, and Elizabeth wife of George Mauck.

George's marriage to Edith Winfield in 1832 was obtained from the Shenandoah Co., VA marriage records. The bondsman was John Carson. George's last name was spelled Mouck.

George is listed in the estate appraisal of George Dellinger 09 May 1831 (@7). George was paid money by this estate for the repair of a mill 26 Mar 1828 and for sawing done for the mill 27 Mar 1828. Also appearing in this appraisal is Richard Ridgeway, who is enumerated several homes from George Mauck in the 1840 census of Warren Co., VA.

George Mauck appears in the 1840 census of Warren Co., VA (50-60 yrs old) adjacent David Dellinger and Henry Huffman. Of interest is Abigail Mauck (Shambaugh) and Philip Setzer appear on the same page. Abigail was the wife of Jacob Mauck, son of Daniel Mauck & Rebecca Baker. Philip Setzer was the husband of Susanna Mock, daughter of George Mock and Sophia Muller. There is no known family connection between these three Mauck/Mock families.

David Dellinger is identified as a son of George Dellinger in a Warren Co., VA deed dated 11 Sep 1838 (@8) where he sold land on Passage Creek that he had inherited from his father. Henry Huffman was the father of Mary Jane Huffman, who married George and Edith's son William in 1862. Henry's wife, Catharine, is identified by the Will of George Dellinger as his daughter (@9).

With George in the 1840 census were 1 boy 10-15 and 1 boy 15-20. One of these was probably his son William. The census also indicates there was one person in the household who was "Insane and Idiots at private charge". This may have been the second boy.

George Mauck appears in the 1850 census of Warren Co., VA with his wife Edith and son William. George is listed as 56 years old, born in VA, a Millwright, with no real estate. Edith's birth was estimated from the age (47) provided in this census and her death record (see below). Eleven households down is Robert Mauck and his wife Rebecca Watson.

Edith's death Aug 1853 is recorded in the Warren Co., VA death register. Her death was reported by George, who identified her age as 55 yrs and her father as Samuel Winfield. The Virginia Deaths and Burial Index indicates the date as Aug 1854.

George Mauck appears in the 1860 census of Buckton, Warren Co., VA by himself. He is listed as a 71 yr old pauper, b. in PA, with no real estate and $15 of personal property.

John Mourer is identified as a son of George and Ann Mary Mourer in George's Shenandoah Co., VA Will dated 15 Nov 1775 and proven 28 May 1776 (@15).

John's wife, Margaret, is identified as a daughter of George Ziegler in a Shenandoah Co. deed dated 25 Aug 1784 where she, her husband John and her sisters sold 300 acres to George Granstaff. This deed states George died Intestate and left his property to his 7 daughters, having had no sons. The property is described as being on Narrow Passage Creek. (@16). Of interest is George Ziegler's other daughters included Susanna who married Stephen Showman. Stephen Showman was a witness to the will of Jacob Helsley, the same will the George Mauck appears in as a witness.

John purchased back 100 acres on both sides of Narrow Passage Creek from George Granstaff in Shenandoah Co., VA 11 Jul 1790 (@17) and an additional 22 acres there 10 Mar 1800 (@18). On 13 Apr 1801 John and Margaret his wife sold the 22 acres they purchased 10 Mar 1800 (@19).

+ 11 F    i. Sarah Ann Mauck was born about 1818 in VA, died on 29 Jan 1889 about age 71, and was buried in Brook's Cemetery, Jefferson Co., IA.

+ 12 M    ii. William Francis Mauck was born about 1821 in Warren Co., VA, died on 16 Jul 1899 about age 78, and was buried in Rockland Community Cemetery, Warren Co., VA.

George next married Edith Winfield on 13 Nov 1832 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Edith was born about 1798 in VA and died in Aug 1853 in Warren Co., VA about age 55.

3. Elizabeth Mock (Gottlieb1) was born on 6 Dec 1781 in Lancaster Co., PA, died on 7 Jul 1846 in OH at age 64, and was buried in New Salem Methodist Protestant Cemetery, Perry Co., OH.

Elizabeth's birth appears in the church records of the "Muddy Creek Church" (Lutheran and Reformed) at East Cocalico Twp., Lancaster Co. PA. This church record states she was born 6 Dec 1781. Her parents are identified as Gottlieb and Anna Mack. The sponsors were Adam and Christina Moser.

Elizabeth's birthdate appears in the bible records of her brother Philip as 9 Dec 1781. For further on the bible records, see the narrative under Gottlieb Mock and Anna Ziegler.

Joel appears in th personal property tax lists of Shenandoah Co., VA in 1795, 1801, 1802, 1803, 1804, 1805, 1806, 1807 and for the last time in 1809. In the 1805 tax list he is listed with Elijah Berry, who is identified as his brother. Other Berry's in these tax lists during this time include Anthony, Malachi, Ackerry, Richard and John.

The marriage of Joel and Elizabeth appears in the marriage records of Shenandoah Co., VA. The bondsman was Godlove Mauk.

Joel is buried near his brother Elijah in the New Salem Methodist Episcopal Cemetery north of New Salem, Perry Co., OH. His headstone provided his date of birth, and year of death as 1813.

Joel died intestate and his administrator's, Elizabeth his widow and Abraham Hite, were appointed 19 Sep 1809 (@1). This would indicate his headstone death date of 1813 was incorrect.

Joel's probate records (@2) state that Abraham Hite was appointed guardian of Joel's two minor children, Elizabeth and Margaret Berry 30 May 1814. It also shows a receipt on 8 Mar 1810 for money paid to the land office for 120 acres Joel owned in the southwest corner of Section 30, Twp. 18, Range 17 Fairfield Co., OH. This location became part of Perry Co., OH when it was formed in 1818. Margaret and Elizabeth later sold this land.

In the Fairfield Co., OH marriage records, on 17 Jan 1811 Elizabeth Berry married Henry Smith. This was Elizabeth's 2nd marriage.

Henry Smith died intestate in 1814(@3). His wife, Elizabeth, was named administrator. Amongst those receiving money from Joel's estate were Elijah Berry and Christian Smith.

Christian Smith is identified as an infant son of Henry Smith deceased, in Fairfield Co., OH guardianship papers 15 Sep 1818 (@4).

Elizabeth's third marriage, to James Miller on 17 Aug 1815, appears in the marriage records of Fairfield Co., OH.

Elizabeth's will was dated 6 July 1846 and probated 14 July 1846 in the Fairfield Co. Probate Court (@5). It lists her children as Peggy Roberts (it was actually Margaret Rose), Elizabeth Roberts and Christian Smith deceased. Her children by James Miller were not listed.

James and Elizabeth are buried in the New Salem Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery in Perry Co., OH. Elizabeth's headstone states she died July 7, 1846 in her 65th year (born 1781). James's headstone provided his dates of birth and death (@6).

Mary's birthdate of 17 Aug 1783 was provided by the bible records of her brother Philip. For further on the bible records, see the narrative under Gottlieb Mock and Anna Ziegler.

Mary and Benjamin's birth and death dates were provided by The Wenger Book, A Foundation Book of American Wengers, published by Pennsylvania German Heritage History Inc. This book identifies Mary's birthdate as 15 Aug 1783.

Benjamin and Ann appear in the 1850 census of Rockingham Co., VA, which indicates both were born in PA.

Benjamin was a Mennonite Minister and resided at Dayton, Rockingham Co., VA (@1).

Mary's headstone identis her as Ann Mary Mock and provided her birth and death dates.

@1) History of Mennonites in Virginia 1727-1900 by Harry Anthony Brunk

Mary married Benjamin Wenger, son of Joseph Graybill Wenger and Barbara Huber. Benjamin was born on 28 Apr 1781 in Rockingham Co., VA, died on 26 Feb 1865 in Rockingham Co., VA at age 83, and was buried in Early Graveyard, Rockingham Co., VA.

Nancy's birthdate was provided by the bible records of her brother Philip. There is no direct proof that Gottlieb and Anna were Nancy's parents, however, given the totality of information about Nancy and her siblings, it is this author's opinion that these were her parents. For further on this, see the narrative under Gottlieb Mock and Anna Ziegler.

Elijah appears in the personal property tax lists of Shenandoah Co., VA in 1805, 1807 and 1809. In the 1805 list he is listed with Joel Berry, who is identified as his brother. Other Berry's in the same tax lists from 1800 through 1810 include Achory, Anthony, Malachi, Richard and John.

Nancy's marriage to Eijah appears in the marriage records of Shenandoah Co., VA. The bondsman was George Mauk.

Elijah is listed In The Index to Serviceman of War of 1812, State of Ohio as having served as a private in Capt. Jacob Catterline's Company. This source also lists Elijah's date of birth and death, and Nancy's, quoting it's source as the History of Fairfield Co., OH. Nancy's birth date is listed as 14 Mar 1785.

Elijah and his son Elijah appear In The History of Fairfield Co., OH. This book states that Elijah Sr. came to Fairfield Co., OH between 1806 and 1808 with his wife and two children (see tax lists above). He resided in Walnut Twp. some ten or twelve years, then moved to Richland Twp. They resided in Seneca Co., OH for four years, then returned to Fairfield Co. in 1837, where they raised a family of nine children. Elijah and Nancy lived in Fairfield Co. until their deaths. This book does not list Nancy's birth or death dates, conflicting with the information in the Index to Servicemen of War of 1812 (above).

Nancy and Elijah are buried in the New Salem Methodist Episcopal Cemetery north of New Salem, Perry Co., OH. Their headstones provided their dates of death and age at death. Nancy's death date is indicated as 16 Jul 1857 at the age of 72 years 3 months 2 days. This calculates out to be 14 Apr 1785, 8 days off that of the above bible record. The bible record date was used in this work.

Nancy married Elijah Berry, son of Berry, on 8 Jun 1806 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Elijah was born on 9 Dec 1781 in VA, died on 19 Dec 1848 in Fairfield Co., OH at age 67, and was buried in New Salem Methodist Episcopal Cemetery, Perry Co., OH.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 17 F    i. Mary Ann Berry was born about 1806 in VA.

6. Barbara Mock (Gottlieb1) was born on 15 Apr 1787 in PA.

Barbara's birthdate was provided by the bible of her brother Philip. For further information on this bible, see the narrative under Gottlieb Mock and Anna Ziegler.

In Berk's Co., PA on 26 May 1782 Peter Schneider, son of Valentine Schneider, married Anna Maria Ziegler, daughter of the late Conrad Zeigler (@1), father of Anna who married Gottlieb Mock.

In the Lutheran-Zion Pine Church Record 1786-1827 Stoney Creek, Virginia Vol II by Klaus Wust, Peter Schneider and Anna Maria Scheider appear as communicants several years from 1803 through 1826.

The will of Peter Snider dated 24 Jul 1832 and proved 11 Mar 1833 (@2) in Shenandoah Co. names his wife as Ann Maria and children as Ann wife of John Wiseman, Mary Bowman wife of Christley Bowman, Elizabeth wife of Absalom Rinker. Witnesses Joseph H. Samuels, Joseph Pitman, Andrew Pitman.

On 9 Apr 1810 in Shenandoah Co., VA George Mourer and Catharine his wife sold 72 acres to Peter Snyder (@3). This George Mourer was the son of John Mourer Sr. and his wife Margaret Zigler. George's brother, John Mourer, was the father of Elizabeth Mourer who married George Mauck in 1803 Shenandoah Co., VA.

On 3 Jun 1818 Peter Snider posted the bond for the marriage of Barbara Mauck to Elkana Skeen in Shenandoah Co., VA. Peter Schneider/Snyder's wife was a sister of Anna Ziegler, who married Gottlieb Mock.

Barbara married Elkana Skeen on 3 Jun 1818 in Shenandoah Co., VA.

7. John Mock (Gottlieb1) was born on 4 Oct 1789 in PA.

John's birthdate was provided by the bible records of his brother Philip. There is no direct proof that Gottlieb and Anna were John's parents, however, given the totality of information about John and his siblings, it is this author's opinion that these were his parents. For further on this, see the narrative under Gottlieb Mock and Anna Ziegler.

John "Mocks" appears as a buyer in the estate sale of Jacob Helsley 21 Feb 1814 (@1). John's possible brother, George, appears as a witness to Jacob Helsley's Will dated 21 Nov 1811 and proved 07 Feb 1814 (@2). This Will also identifies Jacob's wife, Mary, and their children, which included Peter Helsley.

Elizabeth's birth appears in the records of the Lutheran Zion-Pine Church on Stoney Creek (@3). The birth record identifies her parents, Peter and Catherina, and her baptism date. The sponsor was Catherina Hallar. John and Elizabeth's son, Levy, also appears in the records of this church.

Elizabeth Helsley married "John Maup" 28 Apr 1812 in Shenandoah Co., VA. The marriage record identifies Elizabeth's father as Peter Helsley. John's age is estimated assuming he was over 17 when married.

Peter Helsley's will dated 20 Oct 1849 and proved 12 Jun 1854 (@4) and subsequent probate records 09 May 1857 (@5) indicate his daughter Elizabeth Mauck was deceased and of Ohio. Money was paid to "Elizabeth's heirs", but they are not identified. Peter's will identifies his father as Jacob Helsley and his children as Frederick, Joseph, Elizabeth Mock late of OH, Catharine Foltz dec'd, Mary wife of Daniel Dellinger, Dorothy wife of George Dellinger, Rebecca Hunsbayer dec'd, Eve wife of George Grandstaff, and Sarah wife of Mumaw.

Of interest is that Peter Helsley's Will and the same probates that identify Elizabeth Mauck also idenitify one of his sons as Joseph. According to "Mauck-Fry Families of The Shenandoah Valley of Virginia" by Mabel L. Miller, Elizabeth Fry b. 1841, daughter of Henry Fry and Elizabeth Monaham, married Washington Helsley, son of Joseph and Catherine Helsley, 21 Jul 1858 in Woodstock, Shenandoah Co., VA. Elizabeth's sister Delilah Fry b. 16 Oct 1833, married Marcus Mauck in Shenandoah Co., VA 10 Apr 1851. This book details the family of Marcus Mauck b. 1821-1835 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Marcus's parents are not known and after 1870 he lived with his family in Columbia Furnace, near Stoney Creek, Shenandoah Co., VA. Marcus may be a son of George or John Mauck, but documentation of a connection has not been found.

Of interest is that Henry Lonas and Sivila Helsley, uncle and aunt of Elizabeth, went to Knox Co., TN where Henry Lonas appears as an elder of the Lonas Lutheran Church near Knoxville (@6). Appearing with Henry Lonas is another elder of the church, Henry Mauck. It is not known if Henry is related to John and George Mauck/Mock.

Peter is identified as a son of Jacob and Mary Helsley in his father's Will dated 21 Nov 1811 and proved 07 Feb 1814 (@7). Catharina is identified as a daughter of Peter Hollar, and the wife of Peter Helsley, in her father's will dated 22 Oct 1813 and proved 7 Mar 1814 (@8).

Peter's death is recorded in the Shenandoah Co., VA death records. The record lists his parents, birth and death data, and identifies his wife as Catharina. The cause of death is listed as consumption.

Peter's wife, Catharine, was baptized at the Zion Reformed Church on Stoney Creek 30 May 1789 at the age of 18. This record identifies her parents as Peter and Catherine Hollar.

The ancestors of Catherine Hollar who married Peter Helsley are detailed in the book, Haller-Hollar-Holler Genealogy by Amelia Gilreath. For further information on the Hollar family, please refer to this book.

John Mock appears in the 1820 census of Newton Twp., Licking Co., OH. The census indicates he had 2 sons under 10 and 1 daughter under 10.

8. Jacob Mock (Gottlieb1) was born on 8 Jan 1792.

Jacob's birthdate was provided by the bible of his brother Philip. For further information on the bible, see the narrative under Gottlieb Mock and Anna Ziegler.

9. Margaret Mauck (Gottlieb1) was born on 8 Apr 1794 in VA, died about 1870 about age 76, and was buried in Union Forge Cemetery, Edinburg, Shenandoah Co., VA.

Margaret's birthdate was provided by the bible records of her brother Philip.

09 Dec 1806 Peggy Mauck, child of Gottlieb Mauck, is bound by overseer of Poor Dist #1 to Jacob Huddle (River). She is 11 years old Apr. last (@3).

Margaret's marriage to Jacob appears in the marriage records of Shenandoah Co., VA. The bondsman was Jacob Y. Barnes.

Jacob and Margaret appear in the 1840, 1850 and 1860 census of the Edinburg District of Shenandoah Co., VA. Jacob's birth and death dates, his parents, Margaret's death date, and their burial place was provided by Marvin Vann's Shenandoah Co., VA, a Study of the 1860 census Vol 1. This source states they lived on a farm on the north branch of the Shenandoah river.

In the 1850 and 1860 census Margaret is shown with an age that would make her born about 1800. Her headstone states she died at the age of 75 years. She does not appear in the census in 1870, her husband is listed without her, living with their son Amos. It appears that Margaret died prior to this census, which would indicate the census age was probably inaccurate.

Jacob's parents, George and Mary, appear in the Shenandoah Co. Will of Mary's father Jacob Hottel, which was dated 25 Jun 1813 and proved 13 Sep 1813 (@1). Her father's Will identifies Mary as his daughter and George as her husband. It also identifies Jacob's father as Charles Hottel, dec'd.

George Hutchinson's marriage to Mary Hottle (Huddel) 23 Nov 1792 appears in the marriage records of Shenandoah Co., VA. The bondsman was Joseph Burner.

Mary Hutcheson's estate in March 1836 (@2) identifies her sons as John, Jacob, Charles and Joseph.

Of interest is Jacob and Margaret's sons Charles and Jacob Amos married the granddaughters of Augustine Holler and Katy Halterman. Augustine and Katie were married in Shenandoah Co., VA 26 Jul 1798 and the bondsmen were George and Jacob Helsley. Jacob Helsley's son Peter Helsley had a daughter, Elizabeth, who married John Mauck 28 Apr 1812. John Mauck's possible older brother George Mauck appears in several probate records involving Jacob Helsley. Jacob Helsley and his son Peter lived near Stoney Creek. Further evidence that Margaret is from this line of Mauck is found in the marriage record of Margaret and Jacob's son William indicates he was born on Stoney Creek, his tombstone indicating his birth as 10 May 1834.

There is a large conflict as to when William was born. According to the 1850-1870 census he was born between 1830 and 1836, and according to his headstone he was born in 1821. If he was born before 1832 he would likely not be the son of George and Edith, as indicated by his marriage record, but the son of George and Elizabeth.

Mary appears with her parents Henry and Catherine Huffman in the 1850 census of Warren Co., VA.

William's middle name, Francis, was obtained from the Warren Co., VA birth records of his daughter Helen.
