1. Marcus A. Mauck was born in 1821-1832 in VA, died on 11 Mar 1906 in Stoney Creek, Shenandoah Co., VA at age 85, and was buried in Coffman Cemetery, Shenandoah Co., VA.

Marcus appears in the 1850 census of Frederick Co., VA (25 yrs) living with the John Bowen family, as a laborer. In 1850 Delilah was enumerated with her parents, Henry and Elizabeth Fry, in Shenandoah Co., VA. The census provided her parents birth data. The bond for the marriage of Henry Fry to Elizabeth Monnham was obtained in Shenandoah Co., VA 13 Jun 1825. The bondsman was William Scott.

Marcus and Delilah's marriage bond in 1851 appears in the Shenandoah Co., VA marriage records. Her father gave his consent in person. Marcus's last name in this record was spelled Mock.

The Warren Co., VA death records indicate Marcus reported the death of an infant as having occurred 7 Nov 1855. The record indicates the infants birthdate was Sep 1855.

The Warren Co., VA birth records indicate Marcus reported the birth of a daughter 09 Sep 1858 in Warren Co., VA. The child's given name was not indicated. This daughter has yet to be identified. The birthdate was verified from the original document.

In the 1860 census of Ford Furnace, Powell's Fort District, Shenandoah Co., VA Marcus (38 yrs) was living with the Julian Miller family. Marcus's occupation was listed as a millwright. "Delilah Fry" was living with her parents as was four of her children: Marcus, Ellen, George, Theadore, and Joseph Mauck.

According to "Shenandoah Co., Virginia: A Study of the 1860 census" Vol II by Marvin J. Vann, Marcus was involved in the construction of several of the furnaces in Shenandoah Co., which often kept him away from his family for extended periods of time.

Marcus enlisted in the confederacy 03 Jun 1861 and served with Co. C of the 3rd VA Infantry. According to National Archives Military Records, Marcus was wounded at Manassas 30 Aug 1862 and did not return to his unit until Dec 1862. Marcus was taken prisoner at Spotsylvania Courthouse 20 May 1864 and sent to Point Lookout Prison in MD 23 May 1864. He was transferred to a prison in Elmira, NY in July 1864. Marcus was released from Elmira 17 May 1865. This information also appears in "Shenandoah Men in Gray" Vol I by Thomas Spratt.

Marcus (age 39 yrs) and Delilah appear together in the 1870 census of Edinburg, Madison District, Shenandoah Co., VA, and in the 1880 census of Hardy Co., VA, with Marcus as 49 yrs old.

In the 1871 Shenandoah Co., VA marriage record of their son George, Marcus's name is indicated as Marcus A. Mauck. The 1881 marriage record of Marcus and Delilah's daughter, Savannah, indicates she was married in her father's home in Wardensville, Hardy Co., WV.

Virginia Confederate Pensions 1884-1958 indicate 11 May 1891 Marcus Mauck, age 62, residing in Columbia Furnace, applied for a pension for wounds received in the battles of 1st Manassas, Malvern Hill, 2nd Manassas, and Gettysburg. The application is dated 11 May 1891. The application indicates at the time of his wounds he was serving with Company C, 33rd VA Regiment, Colonel Cummings. The wounds are listed as right and left thigh, right wrist, 5 fingers on left hand, scalp, and "part of head shot off". The pension was renewed by Marcus A. Mauck on 9 May 1904. His disability status was indicated as totally disabled.

In 1900 Marcus (b. Jun 1832) and Delilah appear in the Madison District of Shenandoah Co., VA. The 1900 census indicates Marcus's father was born in PA and his mother in VA. Delilah is shown to be the mother of 12 children, 9 of which were living.

Marcus's obituary appears in the Shenandoah Herald on March 23, 1906. The article states he died at the age of 80 at home on Stoney Creek and speaks of his service in the Civil War and his marksmanship. Delilah filed a widow's pension application that provided Marcus's date of death as 11 Mar 1906, and the cause as old age. The application indicates they were married in 1851 at Lantz Mills by Reverend Bond.

Delilah appears in the 1910 census of Shenandoah Co., VA with her daughter Laura's family (Laura Cook). The census states that she had a total of 13 children, 9 of which were still living.

Marcus and Delilah are buried together in the Coffman cemetery approx. 1 mile west of Columbia Furnace, Shenandoah Co., VA. Marcus's headstone indicates he was born in 1821 and died in 1905, conflicting with the above data. The pension application death date was used in this document as it is likely the most accurate. The headstones of Marcus & Delilah appear to have been made sometime well after their death.

Delilah's Shenandoah County death certificate identified her parents, occupation, death information, burial date and her birth location. The information on the death certificate was provided by her son, Theadore Mauck "of Edinburg". Delilah's headstone indicates she was born in 1833 and died in 1917.

Marcus and Delilah's family appear in the book "Descendant's of Marcus A. Mauck 1821-1905 and Henry Fry 1800-1870" by Maxwell and Mabel Miller. This book's data sometimes conflicted with data from official records, so it was not used for this work.

Mike McCormick, a descendant of Marcus and Delilah, is in possession of a 3x5 card given to him by his mother that indicates Marcus was the son of John and Bettey Mauck. The card identifies Marcus's siblings as John, Robert, and William Mauck. Mike's mother received the card from a Clifford Racey in approx. 1973. Attempts to locate Clifford Racey discovered he is since deceased.

Mike also indicated Marcus and Delilah died in the home of their daughter Laura Mauck and her husband Jim Cooke. As of 1996 Mikes mother, Mrs. McCormick of Strasburg, VA, owned the property on which Marcus and Delilah had their home. The lane that accesses this property, Mauck Lane, is one mile due west of Columbia Furnace. The cemetery where Marcus and Delilah are buried is on a hillside above and north of the creek that runs through the property.

The source of the information on the card indicating John and Bettey Mauck as Marcus's parents along with his siblings isn't known. One possibility is the John Mauck who married Elizabeth Helsley in Shenandoah Co., VA 28 Apr 1812. Their marriage record identifies her father as Peter Helsley. Elizabeth's birth 20 Mar 1793 appears in the records of the Lutheran Zion-Pine Church of Stoney Creek (@2). The birth of John and Elizabeth's son Levi 04 Jul 1814, appears in the same church records.

Delilah's sister Elizabeth Fry married Washington Helsley, son of Joseph Helsley, in 1858. Joseph was a son of Peter Helsley. Peter Helsley and his father Jacob lived several miles west of Columbia Furnace in Shenandoah Co., VA.

The will of Jacob Helsley, grandfather of Elizabeth who married John Mauck, was dated 21 Nov 1811 and proved 07 Feb 1814 (@3). One of the witnesses to Jacob Helsley's will was George Mauck. John Mauck was listed as a buyer at Jacob Helsley's estate sale 21 Feb 1814 (@4),

The family bible of a Philip Mock was donated to the University of Arkansas by one of his descendants, Mrs. Carolyn Cazort. The bible lists the birth dates of Philip and his siblings:

These were the children of Gottlieb/Godlove Mauck whose family is included separate from Marcus Mauck on the ShenandoahMaucks.com website. The family moved to the Shenandoah Valley from Pennsylvania between 1790 and 1794. Gottlieb appears in the Shenandoah Co. personal property tax lists from 1794-1800.

The above George Mauck married Elizabeth Mourer in Shenandoah Co., VA 10 Dec 1803. The birth of an unnamed son of George Mauck and his wife in 1806 is recorded in the records of the Lutheran Zion-Pine Church of Stoney Creek (@2).

Between 1810 and 1830 some of this Mauck family moved to Fairfield and Perry Counties, Ohio. Others to Arkansas. George remained in the area of Shenandoah Co., VA, then Warren Co., VA until his death in the 1860's. Living with George in the 1850 census was William Mauck born abt 1821. Also in Warren County 1840 and later was a Robert Mauck born abt. 1808 in VA, whose parents are not known. Robert's family is also shown on ShenandoahMaucks.com.

Peter Helsley's Shenandoah County will was dated 20 Oct 1849 and proved 12 Jun 1854 (@5). It states his daughter "Elizabeth Mocks" [wife of John Mauck] was deceased and of Ohio. The will left money to her heirs, but does not name them. The probate for this estate dated 09 May 1857 (@6) indicates the payments to the heirs of Elizabeth were made, but does not name them or their location(s).

Levi Mauck, son of John Mauck and Elizabeth Helsley, appears in the 1850 census of Defiance Co., OH. Where he died and was buried in Dec 1876.

y-DNA samples are being sought from a male descendant of Marcus Mauck and a male descendant from the Gottlieb Mauck line.

Delilah was born on 16 Oct 1832 in Shenandoah Co., VA, died on 20 Mar 1917 in Shenandoah Co., VA at age 84, and was buried on 22 Mar 1917 in Coffman Cemetery, Shenandoah Co., VA.

Ellen appears with her mother, Delilah, in the 1850 census of Shenandoah Co., VA. The census provided her birth information.

Ellen is identified as a daughter of Marcus and Delilah in her Shenandoah Co., VA marriage record. The record provided her full name, their birth data, and his parents and occupation. The person performing the marriage did not record his name or signature. George and Elizabeth were residing in Shenandoah Co. at the time of their marriage.

Elizabeth's 2nd marriage to John Bailey was obtained from the book "Descendant's of Marcus A. Mauck 1821-1905 and Henry Fry 1800-1870" by Maxwell and Mabel Miller, which does not provide their marriage date but indicates their first child was born in 1872.

Elizabet's death and burial information was provided by the Find A Grave website of the burials at the Salem Church of the Brethren in Stephens City, Frederick Co., VA.

Elizabeth married George McCully, son of John McCully and Nelly, on 21 Oct 1869 in Shenandoah Co., VA. George was born about 1847 in Augusta Co., VA.

Elizabeth next married John Bailey.

3. Infant Mauck (Marcus A.¹) was born in Sep 1855 in Warren Co., VA and died on 7 Nov 1855 in Warren Co., VA.

This unnamed daughter of Marcus and Delilah is identified by the Warren Co., VA Death Register, which provided her birth and death information. The death was reported by her father.

4. George Henry Mauck (Marcus A.¹) was born on 2 Jun 1856 in Shenandoah Co., VA, died on 15 Mar 1936 in Shenandoah Co., VA at age 79, and was buried on 17 Mar 1936 in Columbia Furnace Union Church Cemetery, VA.

George appears with his mother Delilah in the 1860 census of Shenandoah Co., VA, and borth his parents in the 1870 census of the same county.

George's marriage to his first wife, Emily Wetzel, appears in the Shenandoah Co., VA marriage records and the VA State Archives Register of Marriages. The record provides their birth data, his occupation, their parents and the fact that Emily was widowed, her father identified as Joseph Miller. Of interest is at the time of their marriage he was 16 and she was 28. The marriage was performed by H. Wetzel and George's father was present. Emily's first marriage to John Wetzel 14 Jun 1862 identifies her first name as Emiline and both her parent's names.

George and Emily appear together in the 1880 census of the Madison District, Shenandoah Co., VA.

Emily is buried in the Old Columbia Furnace Union Church Cemetery near Columbia Furnace. Her headstone provided her birth and death dates.

In 1884 George purchased land from that in 1894 and 1895 he deeded to Bud Mumaw to board George's infant son, Marcus, for 5 years.

George and his 2nd wife, Margaret, appear in the 1900 census. This census indicates they were married for 4 years as of 1900, but shows their oldest child , Michael, as being born in Sep 1894. George, Maggie, and their children also appear in the 1920 census of Shenandoah Co., VA.

George's 2nd wife, Margaret Ann Brown Mauck, is identified as the mother of Jenny Belle Mauck in "Tombstone Inscriptions Shenandoah Co., VA and Bordering Counties" by Duane L. Borden. Jenny is listed as being buried in the Mauck Cemetery in the general vicinity of Columbia Furnace. This book states that "legend holds that this infant daughter of George Henry Mauck and Margaret Ann Brown Mauck is buried here. Probably buried in the early 1900's."

George and Margaret are buried together in the New Columbia Furnace Union Church Cemetery in Shenandoah Co., VA. Their headstones provided their birth and death dates. Henry's death date is indicated as 20 Jun 1861, however, he was listed with his mother in the 1860 census as 5 years old, indicating the birth date on the tombstone is in error.

Margaret's obituary provided her death date and location (@1).

George's Shenandoah County, VA death certificate indicates his birth as 2 Jun 1856 and death as 15 Mar 1936.

George married Emily Miller Wetzel, daughter of Joseph Miller and Eliza, on 10 Aug 1871 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Emily was born on 17 May 1840 in Shenandoah Co., VA, died on 12 Sep 1894 at age 54, and was buried in Columbia Furnace Union Church Cemetery, VA.

Theadore's birth record in the Shenandoah Co., VA birth records identifies his parents as Marcus and Delilah. The record indicates Marcus resided on Smith's Creek and Theadore was born at Pine Forge.

Theadore appears with his mother Delilah in the 1860 census of Shenandoah Co., VA, and both his parents in the 1870 and 1880 census. Theadore and Mary appear in the 1900 census of Shenandoah Co., VA. Theadore's birth is indicated as Dec 1858, which conflicts with his headstone. The 1900 census provided Mary's birth data.

Theadore's marriage to Virginia appears in the Shenandoah Co., VA marriage records and provided Virginia's birth information and parents. Theadore's marriage to Mary was obtained from the Shenandoah Co., VA marriage records, which provided Mary's birth and parents, Solomon Ross and Elinora Helsley, and indicates the marriage took place near Union Forge. The record indicates Thedore was widowed. Both marriages were performed by H. Tallhelm. The marriage of Mary's parents, Solomon and Ellen, was also obtained from the Shenandoah Co., VA marriage records and identified Solomon's parents as Reuben and Mary Ross and Ellen's parents as Joseph and Regina Helsley. Solomon and Ellen are buried in the Dellinger Cemetery near Conicville, Shenandoah Co., VA (@1).

Reuben Ross married Mary Clem 25 Nov 1829 in Shenandoah Co., VA. The bondsman was Jacob Clem. Joseph Helsley married Regina Huntsheyer in Shenandoah Co., VA 27 Mar 1827.

Theadore and Mary appear in the 1900 census of Shenandoah Co., VA.

Theadore and Mary are buried together in the New Columbia Furnace Union Church Cemetery, Shenandoah Co., VA. Mary's headstone provided her birth and death dates. Theadore's headstone provided the incorrect birth year as 1858 and his death date as 19__.

Theadore married Virginia Helsley, daughter of Peter Seix and Matilda Helsley, on 7 Sep 1882 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Virginia was born about 1862 in Shenandoah Co., VA and died before 1885.

Theadore next married Mary R. Ross, daughter of Solomon Ross and Elinora Helsley, on 12 Apr 1885 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Mary was born in Mar 1866 in Shenandoah Co., VA, died in 1938 at age 72, and was buried in Columbia Furnace Union Church Cemetery, VA.

The child from this marriage was:

This unnamed daughter of Marcus and Delilah appears in the Warren Co., VA birth records, her birth being reported by her father.

8. Joseph Mauck (Marcus A.¹) was born about 1860 in VA.

Joseph is listed with his mother, Delilah, in the 1860 census of Shenandoah Co., VA. The census provided his birth information, his age being indicated as 4 months old.

9. Savannah Mauck (Marcus A.¹) was born in 1864 in Columbia Furnace, Shenandoah Co., VA, died on 19 Jun 1954 in Baker, WV at age 90, and was buried on 22 Jun 1954 in Wardensville Cemetery, WV.

Savannah appears with her parents, Marcus and Delilah, in the 1870 census of Shenandoah Co., VA. Her age is listed as 8 yrs. She is again with her parents in the 1880 census of Hardy Co., VA age 16 yrs. In 1880 she was enumerated twice, the second time with her brother George in Shenandoah Co., VA.

Savannah's marriage to Benjamin in 1881 is recorded in the marriage records of Hardy Co., WV as having taken place in Wardensville at the home of Marcus Mauck, the bride's father.

The book Hardy Co. Family History to 1990 lists Benjamin Webster and wis wife Savannah. It identifies Benjamin's granfather as John J. Webster and Benjamin's siblings as Angus, Emma, Betsey Ann and Charles Lee Webster. It does not identify Benjamin's parents. It states Benjamin used to take grain to his grandfather Webster's Mill at Yellow Springs on the Capon River.

Benjamin and Savannah are buried together in the Wardensville Cemetery. Savannah's birth and death dates were obtained from her headstone. Benjamin's death data and occupation were obtained from his death record, his birth record from his headstone. Benjamin's family left a bible which also provided the family data.

Janet Darnley-Head of KY is descended from Lura Etta Webster, daughter of Savannah and Benjamin. She visited Savannah at the home of her daughter in Baker, WV the weekend she died.
