This website is not an active work in progress. The intent is to provide bread crumbs for others to follow. If you would like your genealogy work to be accurate, bread crumbs left by others should not be consumed without caution. They are provided as a research lead to a particular path you would be wise to confirm each step of the way.

The goal here is to help us all focus our research farther back in time. Instead of spending our time repeating the work done by many others, generation after generation.

1. Peter Mauck was born in 1708 in Germany and died in 1771 in Frederick Co., VA at age 63.

Peter is listed as one of the property owners of an area of 4600 acres called the North Mountain Tract in Frederick Co., VA surveyed for Joist Hite 5 Nov 1734 (@1). The ownership of this land was contested by Lord Fairfax, who sued Joist Hite and McKay.

Peter's marriage to Juliana 30 Apr 1739 appears in the records of the Lutheran minister, Reverend John Casper Stoever (@2). The marriage record indicates Opequon was in Orange Co., VA. The Opequon area later became part of Frederick Co.

On 23 Jun 1742 Peter purchased 168 acres on Opequon Creek from Joist Hite (part of Hite's original 5,018 acre patent) (@3). Peter sold this land to Francis Robinson on 5 May 1747 (@3).

Peter's descendant's through his son John are detailed in the excellent book by William Wolph, "The Descendants of Peter Mauck 1708-1980". Mr. Wolph states that Peter was born in Germany in 1708 and arrived in America 17 Aug 1733 in Philadelphia aboard the ship "Samuel". Peter first married Julianna Rheinhart, daughter of Michael Rheinhart, by Rev. Stoever 30 Apr 1739 at Opequon. On 5 May 1747 in Frederick Co., VA Peter appears in a naturalization record that states he had lived in the colony for more than 7 years.

"The Lutheran Church in Virginia 1717-1962", by William Edward Eisenberg, published in 1967, page 25:

"[Rev.] Klug labored on both east and west sides of the Massanutten and went beyond Strasburg into the Opequon - Cedar Creek Settlement. When on November 5, 1746, John Snapp, John Snapp, Sr., Lawrence Snapp and John Ulrich Bucher, were naturalized by the Frederick County Court, they all testified that they had received the Lord's Supper from Pastor Klug and produced certificates with his signature thereon. The next spring at a May 5th court, John George Dellinger, Phillip Glass (Kleez), Jacob Peck, Augustine Windle [married Ulrich Bucher's daughter, Anna Margaretha], Christopher Windle, Peter Mauk [and others] … Phillip Boucher and Michael Boucher all presented similar testimony in order to obtain naturalization. All these had been in the Opequon settlement seven years or more, the children of many of them having been baptized by J. C. Stoever, Jr."

Because of Mr. Wolph's extensive work, this author is not going to repeat his research, and would refer those interested in Peter and his descendants to Mr. Wolph's book, which is available in hard copy and microfilm from the Family History Center Library in Salt Lake City.

Mr. Wolph's work is currently being continued by his niece, Jean Hicks.
